Corey Crawford?s big effort spoiled by iffy penalty in OT

jpeg

Poor performances and senseless penalties in their last few games had put the Blackhawks in a bad spot. A strong performance, partially negated by a questionable call, might have made it worse.
Center Jonathan Toews was called for a trip 37 seconds into overtime on P.K. Subban, who then scored on the ensuing power play to give the Montreal Canadiens a 2-1 victory Tuesday and the two points the Hawks so desperately wanted. The result left the Hawks two points ahead of the Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames in the battle for the eighth and final playoff spot in the

USA Today NFL mock draft mostly has Lions taking offensive lineman

nfl.jpg

NFL mock draft fever is everywhere, inflicting just about every Web site and publication. The latest victim is the USA Today, which released its first of three mocks from six writers.
Lions fans who've been tracking all these mock drafts have noticed a recurring theme: offensive lineman. The guys at USA Today follow this trend. Five of the six believe the Lions will draft either Colorado's Nate Solder (Jarret Bell), Boston College's Anthony Castonzo (Nate Davis) or Tyron Smith (Derek Harper, Sean Leahy and Rob Rang).
Jim Corbett has Detroit taking a cornerback with the 13th overall selection -- Colorado's

Ducks, Blackhawks enter game with common goal: Hold playoff position

25766-650-366.jpg

Despite Thursday's aborted return as a starter, Jonas Hiller remains the Anaheim Ducks' No. 1 goaltender, coach Randy Carlyle told The Orange County Register on Friday. Whether he will play Saturday when the Ducks visit the Chicago Blackhawks wasn't immediately clear.
What is clear heading into Saturday's game is both the Ducks and Blackhawks need to win. One point separates them in the Western Conference standings, with no guarantee they'll hold their places as other teams push to catch them.
The Blackhawks enter the game seventh in the West with 88 points. The Ducks have 87, but the Blackhawks also

NFL owners vote to move kickoffs from 30-yard line to 35-yard line, aiming to cut down on injuries

alg_goodell-new-orleans.jpg

On the final day of the NFL meetings, owners voted 26-6 in favor of moving the kickoff from the 30 to the 35-yard line as a means to shorten the field and cut down on injuries, particularly to the kicking team. After major resistance to moving touchbacks from the 20 to the 25, they were kept at the 20. Touchbacks will increase, which means there will be fewer opportunities for one of the most exciting plays in the game. But the league is looking to cut down on violent collisions.

NFL Draft History: Top 25 Running Back Busts of All Time

I don't know why any team would pick a running back in the first round.
The abuse of the position means that half the backs are out after their first carry; another 25 percent retire after their third season; and the remaining 75 percent can't even coach football, let alone play it, past the age of 30.
Now I'm not very good at math (or stats), but I'm pretty sure that means 150 percent of all running backs are busts.
Despite these alarming stats NFL teams have, and tend to still, draft running backs very high in the draft.

Football 2011 Predictions: Why Alabama Rolls over Auburn in the 2011 Iron Bowl

Only two things seem to be consistent lately in the Iron Bowl, where Alabama and Auburn meet for state bragging rights.
The first truth is records don't matter.  The other is that Bama wins big and Auburn squeaks by.
Since 1970, Alabama has won 13 times by double digits and Auburn has won by double digits only three times.
It can be a game of streaks, since 1970 Auburn had a streak of six in a row, while Alabama had a streak of nine.
Nick Saban is two and two against Auburn since arriving at Alabama, with one of those

Little satisfaction after Flyers win

PHILADELPHIA - Better, but still not enough to put smiles on any Flyer faces.
While the locals finally did break a four-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over Edmonton, no one was giggling over the way the victory was achieved.
After racing to a 2-0 lead and a 17-1 edge in shots for the first period, the Flyers became tentative and spent the rest of the game trying to protect the advantage.
That didn't go real well, as the 30th-place Oilers managed to get a goal in the second period and watched the Flyers turn the puck over time

Baron Davis best remembered for sunroof assist to Blake Griffin

Unfortunately for Baron Davis, his most memorable moment during 21/2 forgettable seasons with the Clippers was throwing a pass through a sunroof to Blake Griffin. …
Not even Donald Sterling could heckle that. …
Two games into their stretch run, Pau Gasol and the Lakers have put the Calamity in Cleveland behind them. …
Clippers announcer Mike Smith, during Wednesday's telecast, said that Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets should have been the NBA's most valuable player in 2008, noting that 2008 MVP Kobe Bryant should have won "three or four" other times. …
